Health Benefits
Bakuchiol is the main component of the volatile oil of Psoralea corylifolia seeds, a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, which accounts for more than 60% of its volatile oil. It is a kind of isoprenyl phenolic terpenoid compound.
Bakuchiol has no photosensitivity and has many benefits for the skin. Based on bakuchiol’s oil control, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects, it is very suitable for oily skin with acne. Another very important benefit of bakuchiol is anti-aging.
Acne Inhibition
Acne formation:
1. Excessive sebum secretion
2. The oxidized sebum stimulates the hair follicles and the pores are blocked
3. The proliferation of Acne bacilli 4. Inflammation occurs.
To solve this problem, we need to start from four aspects:
1. Oil control,
2. Antioxidant,
3. Antibacterial,
4. Anti-inflammatory.
The conventional skin care products for oily acne skin only start from one point: for example, niacinamide is mainly used for oil control, salicylic acid is mainly used for exfoliation, and BPO is mainly used for sterilization. But bakuchiol is an all-rounder.
At the same time, bakuchiol has an effect similar to estrogen, which can inhibit the production of 5-α-reductase, thereby inhibiting sebum secretion and controlling oil. A fat-soluble antioxidant that is stronger than vitamin E, can effectively protect sebum from being peroxidized, thereby preventing hyperkeratosis of hair follicles. In terms of antibacterial, bakuchiol is effective against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, and bacteria on the skin surface. It also has good inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus epidermidis and Candida albicans.
Anti-Aging
Compared with retinol, the mechanism of action is similar, but bakuchiol is more stable and less irritating. On the one hand, bakuchiol directs the skin epidermis to accelerate the renewal, making the epidermis thicker and more orderly; it can also direct the dermis to accelerate the production of collagen and inhibit the destruction of collagen by metal matrix protease MMP.
Other pharmacological activities:
1. Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect,
2. Antioxidant and liver protection,
3. Anti-cancer effect,
4. Antidepressant effect,
5. Estrogen-like effects.
