Turmeric has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of conditions. Studies show that turmeric helps fighting infections and some cancers, reducing inflammation, and treating digestive problems.
Turmeric has been used in Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems, skin diseases, and wounds.
Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant, which can fight free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause. In addition, curcumin lowers the levels of two enzymes in the body that cause inflammation. It also stops platelets from clumping together to form blood clots.
Studies proved that turmeric is helpful for the following conditions:
Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which some people think may help improve digestion. It has approved turmeric for digestive problems in Germany. It was found in one double-blind, placebo-controlled study that turmeric reduced symptoms of bloating and gas in people suffering from indigestion.
Turmeric is able to help people with ulcerative colitis. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study, people whose ulcerative colitis was in remission took either curcumin or placebo, along with conventional medical treatment, for 6 months. Those who took curcumin had a significantly lower relapse rate than those who took placebo.
Early studies found that turmeric could help prevent atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque that can block arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke. In animal studies, turmeric extract lowered cholesterol levels and kept LDL cholesterol from building up in blood vessels. Because it prevents platelets from clumping together, turmeric can also prevent blood clots from building up along the walls of arteries.
Due to curcumin’s powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing features, a study was conducted on 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients to compare the benefits of curcumin in turmeric to the arthritis drug Diclofenac sodium. The study split these volunteers into three groups: curcumin treatment alone, Diclofenac sodium alone, and a combination of the two.
The curcumin group showed the highest percentage of improvement in overall. More importantly, curcumin treatment was found to be safe.
A number of laboratory studies on cancer cells have shown that curcumin does have anticancer effects. It seems to be able to kill cancer cells and prevent more from growing. It has the best effects on breast cancer, bowel cancer, stomach cancer and skin cancer cells.
Studies found that curcumin is able to break through chemo-resistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Doctors commonly face the challenge of patients initially responding to chemotherapeutic drugs and then developing resistance. Curcumin is helpful re-sensitizing these these cancer cells to the drugs.
It helps lowering blood sugar and reversing insulin resistance to add turmeric into your diet.
In a study out of Auburn University that explored how turmeric can help reverse diabetes. The study found that curcumin is literally 400 times more potent than Metformin in activating AMPK which improves insulin sensitivity.
Curcumin has also been proven to help reverse many of the issues related to insulin resistance and hyperglycemia, one of the most common complications of diabetes is damaged blood vessels, which cause blindness. A study found that curcumin can delay this horrible complication of diabetes because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Turmeric removes cholesterol from liver. Thus, it saves from fatty liver disease where the fat accumulation in liver exceeds more than 5-10% of the weight of the liver, which can also lead to serious complications. Meanwhile, it helps in prevention by controlling assimilation of cholesterol in the liver.
Curcumin, one of the active ingredients in turmeric is believed to communicate with liver cells to produce more LDL receptors. Due to increase in receptors, more cholesterol is cleared from our body. Studies have shown that LDL receptors increase multifold in number when liver cells are treated with turmeric.
